Being at university can be an exciting time for meeting new people and making new connections. You may meet new romantic partners or new friends on your course, at social clubs or in accommodation. This could be your first time living away from home or in a new country and discovering your identity or sexuality.
So, let’s talk, because relationships can be complicated! You have the right to be respected, comfortable and happy in any relationship. Enhancing your understanding of the foundations that make healthy relationships, can help you form more positive, safe, and supportive connections. YoungMinds offers tips for dating and building healthy relationships.
This year our Swipe Right on Respect campaign is asking for your ideas on what you think are ‘green flags or ‘red flags’ in a relationship.
Some great green flags to look out for in your relationships could be:
Good communication
Emotional intelligence
Having empathy
Showing respect
Being trustworthy
Consensual
Supportive of one another
What else would you add?
Can you recognise signs of an unhealthy relationship? Some red flags to be aware of could be:
Pushing your boundaries
Controlling and manipulating behaviours
Jealousy and possessiveness
Judgement
Lacking consent
Violent or threatening behaviours
Can you think of some more?
It can be hard to recognise sometimes, so you could take the quiz here LoveRespect or watch these videos which may help you with some signs to look out for.
