Do One Thing

November can be a tricky time: the homesickness, the shorter days and the stress of deadlines can feel overwhelming.

That’s why we’re suggesting that students Do One Thing to help improve their experience at university. It doesn’t have to be huge; in fact the simpler the better.

In this blog post the Mental Health and Wellbeing and the Skills@Cumbria teams share their Do One Thing tips. Visit the Do One Thing webpage to see what One Thing the other Student Services’ teams and the Student Union are suggesting.

Practise gratitude and celebrate small victories – it can do wonders for your sense of wellbeing.

Some people keep a gratitude journal or jot down things they’re grateful for on slips of paper that they keep in a gratitude jar. Other take photos with their phone. Imagine keeping track of daily gratitude for the rest of this term and then reading back over them or looking at gratitude photos as Christmas moves into New Year: what a way to start the new year!

If you’re finding the concept of Do One Thing helpful, you might enjoy the Just One Thing podcast presented by BBC presenter and writer Michael Mosley, who sadly died earlier this year. The podcast is a great collection of lots of “just one thing” you could do to improve your health and wellbeing, all “scientifically proven to change your life” without taking up lots of your time (BBC, 2024).
