University life can be a wild ride: lectures, assignments, group projects, and trying to figure out your future in the middle of it all. It’s easy to feel like you’re running on empty. That’s why Enhancement Week is such a lifesaver.

This isn’t just a week off. It’s your opportunity to engage in extra-curricular activity to support your personal, academic, and employability skills development. Plus, it’s the perfect time to get familiar with your Careers Team, who can help you take your next big step toward the future. So hit pause, take stock, and set yourself up for academic, personal and professional success!

But what exactly is Enhancement Week, and how can you make the most of it? Let’s dive in!

Enhancement Week is like a pit stop in the middle of your academic marathon. It’s a dedicated week with no formal classes, designed to give you time to:

  • Build skills that go beyond the classroom.
  • Explore opportunities that enhance your personal and professional development.
  • Reflect on your goals and progress.

Think of it as a chance to hit the “refresh” button on your university experience. The themes of the 2025 Enhancement Week are Graduate Attributes* and Digital Capabilities.

Here are some tips to use this week effectively:

1. Plan Ahead

Before the week starts, make a list of what you want to achieve. The Enhancement Week Blackboard site, where you can find the timetable and links to all the online sessions, including webinars from the skills@cumbria, is now available for you to self-enrol; look out for the Enhancement Week announcement on Blackboard.  Whether it’s catching up on coursework, attending a workshop, or just relaxing, having a plan will keep you focused.

2. Try Something New

Step out of your comfort zone! Enhancement Week is the perfect time to explore activities or opportunities you wouldn’t normally consider. Join one of UoC’s clubs or societies, join a fitness class in our gym, or try a new hobby. Who knows, you may discover something you love!

3. Network and Connect

Use this week to build relationships. Attend networking events, connect with lecturers during office hours, or join a club. Building your network now can open doors later. Remember, the Careers Team can help with interview techniques or run though a mock interview with you!

4. Reflect and Reset

At the end of the week, take a moment to reflect. What did you accomplish? How do you feel? Use these insights to start the next part of your term strong.

Not sure where to start? Here are some ways to spend your Enhancement Week:

  • Attend a skills workshop: With a whole week’s worth of sessions from Finding Your Career Direction to Social Enterprise, and Graduate Schemes to Using AI for Job Applications, as well as academic skills and wellbeing, you’re sure to find something interesting and relevant!
  • Work on a personal project: Use this time to dive into something you’re passionate about, like starting a blog or learning a new skill.
  • Explore career opportunities: Polish your CV, practise interview skills, or discuss all things freelance & small business with your Careers Team. Remember you can book an appointment at any time through My Career Enriched.
  • Focus on wellbeing: Try yoga, mindfulness, or get outdoors. Your mental health matters!
  • Volunteer or join a community project: Giving back can be incredibly fulfilling, and it looks great on your CV, too.
